Grants Available to Nova Scotia Businesses (2025): Top Grants + Tips for Applying

Looking for Nova Scotia business grants?

Whether you’re an aspiring Nova Scotia entrepreneur looking for startup funds, or a current business owner looking for money to grow your business, you’re in the right place!

On this page we’ve assembled the best grants for entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia. We also explain the basics of business grants and give you tips on how to maximize your grant funding.

Let’s get started!

What is a Business Grant in Nova Scotia?

A business grant is a specific amount of money given to a business by a government agency, private organization, or non-profit organization for a particular reason.

Grants are usually given to businesses that meet specific requirements, such as being located in a particular region, operating in a specific industry, or focusing on a particular area, such as sustainability or innovation.

The eligibility criteria for grants can differ greatly, so it’s vital to carefully examine the requirements before submitting an application.

What’s the Difference Between Grants and Loans?

Grants and loans are two different types of funding options. The most significant difference between the two is that grants do not require repayment, while loans do.

Grants are typically awarded through a competitive process and are intended to support specific initiatives, industries, audiences, or geographic locations.

On the other hand, loans are usually provided by banks or other financial institutions, and borrowers are required to pay back the loan amount along with interest.

The loan terms depend on the lender, and the interest rate can vary depending on the borrower’s creditworthiness and other factors. While some government loan programs exist, most loans are provided by private financial institutions.

Types of Business Grants in Nova Scotia

Grant organizations, including government ministries, aim to promote job creation and economic growth. In order to achieve this goal, they often provide grants to businesses that support specific:

  • Audiences
  • Activities
  • Industries
  • Regions

To make it easier to remember these categories, we’ve turned them in an acronym: the “AAIR Framework”.

Here’s a breakdown of each:

Business Grants for Audiences

Governments recognize that there are certain groups of people who are not well represented in small business, including Indigenous, women, and black entrepreneurs. To address this, they have established financial incentive programs and grants to support these groups.

Another group that receives considerable support is startups in Nova Scotia

Business Grants for Activities

A number of activities underpin the success of most businesses, and there are grant programs to support them. Key activities include:

  • Hiring and training
  • R&D
  • Purchase of equipment
  • Business expansion (for example, exporting)

Business Grants for Industries

Governments often target specific industries for support, then provide grants and other types of funding for hiring, training, export development and more.

Some of the top industries in Nova Scotia that receive support include:

  • Agritech
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Information & Communications Technology (ICT)

Business Grants for Regions

Finally, funding organizations might target specific geographic regions for support, in order to increase employment and economic growth.

Who Is Eligible for Nova Scotia Business Grants?

That’s a very common question!

While grants are available for entrepreneurs and business of many different backgrounds and industries, there are a few eligibility criteria that are most common:

  1. Incorporation. While grants do exist for sole proprietorships and partnerships, there are many more funding programs that require a business be incorporated.
  2. In business for two (or more) years. As mentioned previously, there are many programs for new businesses (i.e. startups) in Nova Scotia – but many of those programs offer “in-kind” support (e.g. mentorship) rather than cash. You’re more likely to qualify for money programs if you’ve been in business for a minimum of 2 years.
  3. Established revenue. Many grant programs want to see a track record before they will give you non-repayable funds.

Tips for Applying for Nova Scotia Business Grants

  • Align with provincial priorities: Highlight how your project advances Nova Scotia’s economic strategy (e.g., clean growth, value-added seafood).
  • Prepare strong budgets: Provide detailed cost breakdowns, justified quotations, and clear ROI projections.
  • Leverage local supports: Consult advisors and regional business development centres for application feedback.
  • Showcase community impact: Emphasize job creation, export potential, and regional value-chain benefits.
  • Start early: Grant windows can close quickly; give yourself ample time for revisions and approvals.
