Description:
This program also provides functional improvement grants for 15% of the cost for materials and labour up to a maximum grant of $400,000 to install or repair integral building systems, including work to bring these systems up to current building code requirements, improve their energy efficiency (including plumbing, heating, electrical, etc.) or improve their accessibility (including ramps, equipment, etc.).

Eligibility:
Applicants must be owners of properties located within the boundaries of the Schmidtville and Old South Suburb Heritage Conservation Districts (HCDs)
Application Steps:
Applicants must:
1. contact heritage staff prior to submitting a grant application to determine whether the work proposed requires a certificate of appropriateness or approval of substantial alterations.
2. submit a completed application form along with the following supporting documentation to:

If you cannot email or mail your application, please deliver your application in-person to our customer service counter at 5251 Duke Street, (Duke Tower) Suite 300 / 3rd Floor, Halifax.
Documentation Needed:
Applicants must submit:
1. A completed and signed application form;
2. Recent photographs of all sides of the building, illustrating the areas of work for
which the grant is applied;
3. Two contractors quotes for each of the proposed work types; and
4. Buildings governed by a condominium by-law must also provide a copy of the board of
director’s minutes approving the submission of the application.
