Arts Grants Program – Creation Grant

Description:

The Creation Grant supports the creation of artistic projects by Prince Edward Island professional artists in the following disciplines: crafts, dance, interdisciplinary arts, film and media arts, music, theatre, visual arts, and writing and publishing.

Comments on Funding:

Funding for established professional artists is up to $8,000 per artist per year.
Funding for emerging professional artists is up to $5,000 per artist per year.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be individuals or small groups/bands at the established and emerging professional artist levels. Professional artists should meet at least three of the following criteria: have received compensation that is considered part of their personal or business income; have presented their work to the public by recordings, exhibitions, publications, screenings, performance, readings or other means of dissemination; devote a reasonable amount of time creating or disseminating your work; have received reviews, or appraisals by public and/or peer assessment/recognition; have a membership in a professional or industry association or guild recognized by their discipline; have undertaken formal education or training from educational institution(s), or have undertaken self-directed training through a commitment to informal training opportunities that demonstrate commitment to skill development.
  • have a PEI address as their primary residence for a minimum of twelve consecutive months. Artists on extended travel for their work are still considered PEI residents, but those who move their primary residence to another province or country within the twelve consecutive months previous to the application deadline are not eligible.
  • have a majority of members be residents of PEI, if groups or bands.

Students 16+ are eligible to apply however, a parent or guardian must sign the application on their behalf.

Application Steps:

Applicants must submit their applications and supporting documents online.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  •  the online application form,
  • a curriculum vitae or resume,
  • a project description, including the start and end date of the project, the amount requested, as well as any other relevant information,
  • a budget including detailed income and expenses and full disclosure of federal and provincial government assistance,
  • appropriate support material demonstrating recent artistic achievements and which is relevant to the proposed project.

Other Things to Note:

An emerging artist is a professional artist who: 

  • is at the early stage of his career,
  • views art as his vocation, 
  • has specialized artistic training (formal or informal) and has created a modest body of work that includes demonstrated efforts to have had public presentation.

An established artist is a professional artist who:

  •  is recognized in his artistic discipline by his peers, 
  • has specialized training, 
  • has a significant history of public presentation and regional and/or national representation and has created an extensive body of work. 

An amateur artist is a person that demonstrates a high caliber of artistic talent and wishes to bridge into a professional career.

Prix Grand-Pré

Description:

Prix Grand-Pré is an annual award established in 1987. It recognizes Nova Scotia's creative and interpretive artists working in any medium whose work reflects Acadian cultural values, while demonstrating excellence and originality. 

Comments on Funding:

The award carries a cash value of $5,000.

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years, 
  • have had an impact on the province’s Acadian culture,
  • be currently active in their artistic practice,
  • agree to be nominated,
  • not have received the Grand-Pré Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by an individual, a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Application Steps:

The nominator must:

complete the nomination form and supply adequate support material,

also obtain permission from the nominee,

3

deliver the application by email to artsnssubmissions@novascotia.ca.

Portia White Prize

Amount:

$18,000.00

Description:

The Portia White prize recognizes cultural and artistic excellence on the part of a Nova Scotian artist who has attained professional status, mastery and recognition in their discipline. 

Comments on Funding:

The primary recipient will receive $18,000 and a certificate of recognition.
A secondary recipient, who is an emerging Nova Scotia artist or a Nova Scotia cultural organization selected by the primary recipient, will receive $7,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years,

  • not have received a Portia White Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by three individuals who are all currently residents in the province, or, by a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Artist Recognition Awards

Description:

The Artist Recognition Awards help artists showcase the recipients’ work to residents of the province and to people beyond Nova Scotia's borders.

They are awarded to artists in three categories:

  1. 1
    The Emerging Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists of any age who are in the early-stages of their professional career, have completed specialized training, and have presented their work publicly.
  2. 2
    The Established Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia.
  3. 3
    The Indigenous Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists of Indigenous backgrounds who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia. 
  4. 4
    The Black Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who are members of the historical Black communities of Nova Scotia and the wider African Diaspora within the province, who have emerged from their initial training or gained experience to become recognized, established artists amongst their immediate communities and Nova Scotia.

Each award carries a cash value of $5,000.

Eligibility:

  • Artists may be nominated by individuals or organizations. 
  • Nominees must have achieved professional recognition, as recognized within their arts discipline. Eligible disciplines are: Theatre, Dance, Literary Arts, Music, Visual Arts, New Media, Media, Design and Craft,
  • Nominees must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and have been resident in the province for at least the past four years.
  • Artists cannot be nominated for both an Artist Recognition Award and the Portia White Prize in the same year.
  • Previous recipients of an Artist Recognition Award cannot be nominated for another in the same category.
  • Previous recipients of the Portia White Prize cannot be nominated for an Artist Recognition Award.
  • The applicants must be professional artists as defined by the Status of the Artist Act (including, but not limited to: having peer recognition, having a history of public presentation, having training appropriate to the artist's chosen discipline (including mentorship and/or apprenticeship training), earning income, fully or in part, from artistic activity, demonstrating serious intent and devotion of energy to practicing art).

complete the nomination form and supply adequate support material to allow the peer assessment committee to assess the nominee’s achievements and career progress,

also obtain permission from the nominee,

3

deliver the application by email to artsnssubmissions@novascotia.ca.

    one-page nominator’s statement OR five-minute video,
  3. 3
    two-page artist CV or description of artistic practice and applicable training,

    the self-identification form, if applying for the Indigenous Artist Recognition Award or the Black Artist Recognition Award.

Nova Scotia Art Bank Purchase Program

Amount:

Description:

Every year the Nova Scotia Art Bank adds to its collection through the Art Bank Purchase Program. Artists submit their works for consideration and the Art Bank acquires some of them. The art works become part of a working collection, they are maintained, loaned out and displayed in government offices and agencies. The program raises awareness of artists and their works and stimulates interest in visual arts and craft. 

Comments on Funding:

Payment for works purchased is deemed taxable income by the Canada Revenue Agency. The Province will issue T4A slips to all artists whose works are purchased.
Payment will be provided following delivery of the work and the signing of an Exhibition & Copyright Agreement.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • be professional artists who are Canadian citizens, or landed immigrants who have maintained their primary residence in Nova Scotia for at least 12 months prior to the application deadline,
  • be professional artist collectives. For the purposes of the Art Bank Purchase program, a collective is defined as a group of (minimum two) artists, the majority of whom reside in Nova Scotia, who share copyright over collaboratively created artworks. A collective may be either a non-profit society or non-profit cooperative registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies or ad-hoc. Ad-hoc collectives will be asked to provide the social insurance number of the signatory applicant who will accept payment.
  • be Nova Scotian Commercial galleries on behalf of a living Nova Scotian artist or artist collective who they represent on regionally-exclusive and contractual basis,
  • have produced the work within five years prior to the application deadline.
  • be professional artists as defined by the Status of the Artist Act (including, but not limited to: having peer recognition, having a history of public presentation, having training appropriate to the artist's chosen discipline (including mentorship and/or apprenticeship training), earning income, fully or in part, from artistic activity, demonstrating serious intent and devotion of energy to practicing art).

Application Steps:

Applicants must:

contact the program officer, if they are unable to submit by email. 

Documentation Needed: 

Applicants must submit:

  • a completed application form per artist,
  • an artist statement (maximum 300 words),
  • a brief résumé or short bio noting education and/or apprenticeship, experience, professional and artistic achievements (maximum 2 pages),
  • a list of all active members along with their place of residence, if an artist collective,
  • a maximum of ten (10) images of work per artist with information provided on the application form for each image. More than one photo may be submitted of the same artwork (e.g. different angles), however the total images submitted may not exceed ten (10). Images must accurately represent the work as is submitted for purchase.
