Options Youth

Description:

Options Youth is a virtual employment wage subsidy program consisting of paid, online, milestone-based skill training, followed by a paid work placement. Options Youth is committed to helping youth overcome barriers to enter the workforce through personalized training to participants and federal wage subsidies to employers in Nova Scotia.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a 700 hour wage subsidy, covering up to $12.55/hr plus MERCs, up to a maximum of $9,818.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be small- and medium- size businesses in Nova Scotia,
  • hire a participant that has completed the online program,
  • place the participant on payroll. 

The participant must be:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection,
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act,
  • legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • in need of assistance to overcome employment barriers.

Application Steps:

invoice the program each month,

provide monthly reports to the Project Manager.

The Options Youth Program is an employment wage subsidy program, facilitated by the Saint Mary’s University Entrepreneurship Centre and funded by Service Canada.

Access Ability

Amount:

Description:

Access Ability is an employment wage subsidy program, dedicated to providing inclusive hiring through federal wage subsidies to employers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a Pay- for - Performance wage subsidy, 100% coverage for up to 20 weeks of work experience.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be employers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador,
  • provide a minimum 35-hour work week,
  • cover the mandatory employment related costs (CPP, EI, Vacation Pay),
  • provide $15/hr wage to their new hire,
  • assign an organization supervisor to act as a mentor for the participant.

The participant must:

  • self identify as a person living with a disability,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada,
  • be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations,
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefit.

Small Enterprise Co-operative Placement Assistance Program (SECPAP)

Description:

The Small Enterprise Co-operative Placement Assistance Program (SECPAP) provides wage subsidies to small businesses that provide work experience to post secondary co-operative education students in Newfoundland and Labrador. Placements are for 12-16 weeks in duration with the exception of computer science which can range from 8-16 months in duration. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is in the form of a wage subsidy. SECPAP will fund 50% of the co-operative education student’s overall hourly salary up to a maximum of $6.38/hr.

Eligibility:

​Applicants must be organizations that have:

  • fewer than fifty employees,
  • annual sales of less than $5,000,000.00,
  • work term located in Newfoundland and Labrador,
  • an individual (generally paid staff) capable of supervising and evaluating students,
  • adequate facilities/accommodations for the placement,
  • a defined task with an appropriate academically relevant job description,
  • a position that is related to the student’s field of study,
  • an understanding of the purpose and academic requirements of co-op work terms,
  • an appreciation of the role of the small business / entrepreneurial sector and its potential for future work,
  • opportunities for students.

Students:

  • must be enrolled in Memorial University of Newfoundland’s co-operative education programs,
  • must be academically eligible to undertake a work term,
  • must be 16 years of age or older and must be eligible to work in Canada,
  • who are immediate family members of applicants would normally be ineligible to be hired in that organization,
  • work term must be located in Newfoundland and Labrador.

email all SECPAP related documents to cesc@mun.ca or via their co-op office contact,

upon successful approval of their SECPAP application, their organizations will enter into the cooperative education job competition process to find a student suitable for the position (only if the organization does not already have an eligible student).

    the SECPAP Reimbursement Claim Form (to be submitted on the 1st business day of each month in order to receive your monies)

SECPAP is funded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Advanced Education and Skills (formerly called Human Resources Labor and Employment) and is administered by the Co-operative Education Services Centre (CESC).

GradWorks: Employer Incentive Program

Description:

GradWorks: Employer Incentive Program matches SMEs across Nova Scotia with skilled, talented NSCC graduates from three eligible programs. It provides SMEs with up to 66% salary support. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 66% salary support – to a maximum of $25,000 – when hiring a qualified NSCC graduate for up to a one-year period.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be a Nova Scotia SME,
  • be in most business sectors, except retail/wholesale, real estate, government services and services of a personal or social nature, and with a preference given to business-to-business organizations focused on export and innovation.
  • employ a NSCC graduate.

The graduates must:

  • have completed an eligible NSCC program within the last three years,
  • have graduated from one of the following programs: Human Resource Management (Advanced Diploma), Industrial Engineering Technology (Diploma) or Occupational Health & Safety (Certificate).

ChangeMaker Funding Program – NouLAB Prototype Fund

Amount:

$10,000.00

Grants


Description:

The NouLAB Prototype Fund provides funding of up to $5,000 to NouLAB teams to prototype ideas to address complex issues.
NouLABs start by bringing together diverse stakeholders to work in a team that acts collectively. The lab team takes an iterative approach to the challenges it wants to address—prototyping and testing interventions, incorporating feedback, and managing a portfolio of promising solutions.
 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to $5,000.
Applicants are eligible for only one funding application per team for prototyping.
Funding awards are taxable.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • be NouLAB teams who have completed the Academy, or are in a Standing Lab. To provide a diversity in perspectives, teams must be multi-disciplinary and have representation across sectors from non-profit, business, government and private sector individuals.
  • reside in New Brunswick (subject to discretion of PDC Executive Board). In the case of NouLAB teams, there may be some members who are resident outside the province. In the case of applicants which are corporations, the majority of shareholders must reside in the eligible province and the registered office must be in the eligible province. In the case of partnerships, the majority of partners and ownership must reside in the eligible provinces.
  • focus on the following key priority areas: Health & Wellness, Immigration & Retention, Poverty Reduction,
  • use the funding for the purpose of prototyping - exploring ideas & testing solutions to complex challenges.

Funding will be subject to a Terms & Conditions contract which specifies the amount of the award, the installments, the term of the funding, the holdback and the requirements for funding recipients including provision of regular progress reports and receipts.

Funding for prototyping will be distributed through and managed by ONE team lead who will be the primary contact for communications.

  • the online application form,
  • proof of residency for the company/entrepreneur and incorporation and legal documents pertaining to the business structures of applicants, if PDC requests them.

Funding recipients are required to provide interim and final progress reports.

Other Things to Note:

The ChangeMaker Funding Program is NOT about the funding. While the funding helps early-stage entrepreneurs and innovators test ideas and build sustainable business models, this program is designed to help build success through providing on-going support and opportunities.
