Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI’ (DS4Y PEl)

Description:

Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI' (DS4Y PEl) is a new internship opportunity for Island youth that provides financial support to Island businesses or non-profit organizations who will act as 'Intern Host Organizations' (IHOs).  

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a maximum of $21,500 per intern in salary funds, understood to be 75% of the intern’s total salary.

SkillsPEI will also provide 'Digital Workplace Skills Training' to be completed during the internship.This will be supported at no cost to the Intern Host Organizations (IHO), although the IHO must agree to allow the intern to participate.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be an Island for-profit business or not-for-profit organization with fewer than 500 employees, 
  • act as 'Intern Host Organizations' (IHOs) to provide a recent graduate with professional experience and an opportunity to learn,
  • provide valuable employment opportunities related to digital activities and skills,
  • have the appropriate administrative support and capacity to train and mentor the intern to enhance and maximize the intern’s experience,
  • allow the intern to attend short training courses to enhance their essential skills and digital skills.

Special consideration will also be given to employers in rural areas, as well as employers looking to hire youth facing employment barriers, Indigenous youth, members of a visible minority group, persons with disabilities, and women.

The intern must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship,
  • have recently completed post-secondary studies, meaning a degree or diploma program from a recognized institution,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status,
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance during their internship,
  • self-assess as unemployed or underemployed, meaning they are employed below their level of education and/or hold part-time employments,
  • not be an immediate family member of the employer.

Application Steps:

The applicant must complete the DS4Y PEI Application Form and submit it to their local SkillsPEI office.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • a completed DS4Y PEI Application Form,
  • a detailed job description - outlining the duties the intern can expect, the proposed wage and terms of employment, and how your company will be providing an experience which will contribute to intern's skill set.

Other Things to Note:

Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI' (DS4Y PEl) is a new internship opportunity for Island youth delivered by the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning with funding support from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).

All internships must conclude by March 31st 2023.

Workplace Skills Training

Amount:

Description:

Workplace Skills Training supports employers to train new or existing employees to develop their skills and align with needs of the business. Training must be short term and meet job-specific and incremental industry requirements of the organization.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 50% of the direct training costs.
The applicant will be required to contribute the remaining 50%.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • registered private sector businesses,
  • organization acting on behalf of a group of employers (e.g. employer consortia, industry associations and sector council businesses),
  • band/tribal councils.

Application Steps:

complete the Workplace Skills Training employer application form and submit it to their local SkillsPEI office,

2

start the training activities after they receive confirmation that their application has been approved for the Workplace Skills Training program.

The applicant must submit:

  • the completed Workplace Skills Training Employer application form,
  • a brief outline of the company’s products or services and the plan, if any, for future growth,
  • a detailed proposal outlining the training objectives, activities, duration and expected results,
  • a detailed project budget which demonstrates your financial contribution,
  • name and details of the proposed training provider,
  • additional information upon request.

Workplace Skills Training

Arts Grants Program – Professional Development Grant

Description:

The Professional Development Grant supports the professional development of PEI professional artists’ careers in the following disciplines: crafts, dance, interdisciplinary arts, film and media arts, music, theatre, visual arts, and writing and publishing.

Comments on Funding:

Funding for established professional artists is up to $2,500 per artist per year.
Funding for emerging professional artists is up to $2,000 per artist per year.
Funding for amateur artists is up to $1,000 per artist per year.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be individuals or small groups/bands at the established professional, emerging professional and amateur artist levels. Professional artists should meet at least three of the following criteria: have received compensation that is considered part of their personal or business income; have presented their work to the public by recordings, exhibitions, publications, screenings, performance, readings or other means of dissemination; devote a reasonable amount of time creating or disseminating your work; have received reviews, or appraisals by public and/or peer assessment/recognition; have a membership in a professional or industry association or guild recognized by their discipline; have undertaken formal education or training from educational institution(s), or have undertaken self-directed training through a commitment to informal training opportunities that demonstrate commitment to skill development.
  • have a PEI address as their primary residence for a minimum of twelve consecutive months. Artists on extended travel for their work are still considered PEI residents, but those who move their primary residence to another province or country within the twelve consecutive months previous to the application deadline are not eligible.
  • have a majority of members be residents of PEI, if groups or bands,
  • use the financial assistance for professional development and skill building activities that advance their artistic work and careers. Eligible programs include mentoring, apprenticeships, residencies, short-term training programs, portfolio and support material development, workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Students 16+ are eligible to apply however, a parent or guardian must sign the application on their behalf.

Applicants must submit their applications and supporting documents online.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • the online application form,
  • a curriculum vitae or resume,
  • a project description, including the start and end date of the project, the amount requested, as well as any other relevant information,
  • a budget including detailed income and expenses and full disclosure of federal and provincial government assistance,
  • appropriate support material demonstrating recent artistic achievements and which is relevant to the proposed project.

Other Things to Note:

An emerging artist is a professional artist who:

  • is at the early stage of his career,
  • views art as his vocation,
  • has specialized artistic training (formal or informal) and has created a modest body of work that includes demonstrated efforts to have had public presentation.

An established artist is a professional artist who:

  • is recognized in his artistic discipline by his peers,
  • has specialized training,
  • has a significant history of public presentation and regional and/or national representation and has created an extensive body of work.

​An amateur artist is a person that demonstrates a high caliber of artistic talent and wishes to bridge into a professional career.

Prix Grand-Pré

Description:

Prix Grand-Pré is an annual award established in 1987. It recognizes Nova Scotia's creative and interpretive artists working in any medium whose work reflects Acadian cultural values, while demonstrating excellence and originality. 

Comments on Funding:

The award carries a cash value of $5,000.

Eligibility:

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years, 
  • have had an impact on the province’s Acadian culture,
  • be currently active in their artistic practice,
  • agree to be nominated,
  • not have received the Grand-Pré Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by an individual, a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Application Steps:

The nominator must:

complete the nomination form and supply adequate support material,

also obtain permission from the nominee,

deliver the application by email to artsnssubmissions@novascotia.ca.

​Arts Nova Scotia Guidelines​​​

Portia White Prize

Amount:

$18,000.00

Grants


Description:

The Portia White prize recognizes cultural and artistic excellence on the part of a Nova Scotian artist who has attained professional status, mastery and recognition in their discipline. 

Comments on Funding:

The primary recipient will receive $18,000 and a certificate of recognition.
A secondary recipient, who is an emerging Nova Scotia artist or a Nova Scotia cultural organization selected by the primary recipient, will receive $7,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Eligibility:

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years, 
  • have made an impact on the province’s cultural life,
  • be currently active in their artistic practice,
  • agree to be nominated,
  • not have received a Portia White Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by three individuals who are all currently residents in the province, or, by a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Application Steps:

The nominator must:

complete the nomination form and supply adequate support material,

also obtain permission from the nominee,

deliver the application by email to artsnssubmissions@novascotia.ca.
