Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI’ (DS4Y PEl)

Description:

Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI' (DS4Y PEl) is a new internship opportunity for Island youth that provides financial support to Island businesses or non-profit organizations who will act as 'Intern Host Organizations' (IHOs).  

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a maximum of $21,500 per intern in salary funds, understood to be 75% of the intern’s total salary.

SkillsPEI will also provide 'Digital Workplace Skills Training' to be completed during the internship.This will be supported at no cost to the Intern Host Organizations (IHO), although the IHO must agree to allow the intern to participate.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be an Island for-profit business or not-for-profit organization with fewer than 500 employees, 
  • act as 'Intern Host Organizations' (IHOs) to provide a recent graduate with professional experience and an opportunity to learn,
  • provide valuable employment opportunities related to digital activities and skills,
  • have the appropriate administrative support and capacity to train and mentor the intern to enhance and maximize the intern’s experience,
  • allow the intern to attend short training courses to enhance their essential skills and digital skills.

Special consideration will also be given to employers in rural areas, as well as employers looking to hire youth facing employment barriers, Indigenous youth, members of a visible minority group, persons with disabilities, and women.

The intern must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship,
  • have recently completed post-secondary studies, meaning a degree or diploma program from a recognized institution,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status,
  • not be in receipt of Employment Insurance during their internship,
  • self-assess as unemployed or underemployed, meaning they are employed below their level of education and/or hold part-time employments,
  • not be an immediate family member of the employer.

Application Steps:

The applicant must complete the DS4Y PEI Application Form and submit it to their local SkillsPEI office.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • a completed DS4Y PEI Application Form,
  • a detailed job description - outlining the duties the intern can expect, the proposed wage and terms of employment, and how your company will be providing an experience which will contribute to intern's skill set.

Other Things to Note:

Digital Skills 4 Youth PEI' (DS4Y PEl) is a new internship opportunity for Island youth delivered by the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning with funding support from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).

All internships must conclude by March 31st 2023.

Employ PEI – For Employers

Description:

Employ PEI is an employment program to help job seekers develop new skills and gain work experience through on-the-job training. By providing a temporary wage subsidy to an employer, it helps create long term employment opportunities and assists the employer with the cost of hiring and training a new employee.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a subsidy of 50% of the wages, up to a maximum contribution of $12.50/hour to a maximum of 20 weeks.

Eligibility:

The employer must be:

  • a registered private sector business,
  • an organization, 
  • a municipality,
  • a band/tribal council,
  • a public health or educational institution,

The employee must be: 

  • unemployed and looking for full-time work,
  • legally authorized to work in Canada (Canadian citizen or permanent resident),
  • out of high school for at least 2 years.

The applicant/employer must submit their application package and receive confirmation from SkillsPEI that they have been approved for the program before they start their new job,

  • the completed application form,
  • a detailed job description,
  • the contact details for the new employee,
  • a sustainability plan to maintain the new employee following the subsidy period.

EMPLOY PEI Application for Organizations

Graduate mentorship – For Employers

Description:

The Graduate Mentorship Program is an employment program developed to help employers create long term employment opportunities for unemployed recent post-secondary graduates in their field of study.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a subsidy of up to 50% of the wages, up to a maximum contribution of $10/hour for 52 weeks.

Eligibility:

The applicant/employer must be:

  • a registered private sector business,
  • an organization, 
  • a municipality,
  • a band/tribal council,
  • a public health or educational institution,
  • hiring a recent post-secondary graduate who lacks the work experience necessary for the position,
  • paying a minimum wage rate of $15/hour.

The employee must be:

  • an unemployed, recent post-secondary graduate within the last five years and looking for full time employment, 
  • legally authorized to work in Canada (Canadian citizen or permanent resident). 

Application Steps:

The applicant/employer must:

interview and select a candidate for the position,

submit their application package and receive confirmation from SkillsPEI that they have been approved for the program before they start their new job.

  • the completed application form,
  • a detailed job description,
  • the contact details for the new employee,
  • a sustainability plan to maintain the new employee following the subsidy period.
  • a detailed mentorship plan,
  • the description of the business or company profile and the location of the activity.

Workplace Skills Training

Description:

Workplace Skills Training supports employers to train new or existing employees to develop their skills and align with needs of the business. Training must be short term and meet job-specific and incremental industry requirements of the organization.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 50% of the direct training costs.
The applicant will be required to contribute the remaining 50%.

The applicant must:

  • registered private sector businesses,
  • organization acting on behalf of a group of employers (e.g. employer consortia, industry associations and sector council businesses),
  • band/tribal councils.

Application Steps:

complete the Workplace Skills Training employer application form and submit it to their local SkillsPEI office,

start the training activities after they receive confirmation that their application has been approved for the Workplace Skills Training program.

The applicant must submit:

  • the completed Workplace Skills Training Employer application form,
  • a brief outline of the company’s products or services and the plan, if any, for future growth,
  • a detailed proposal outlining the training objectives, activities, duration and expected results,
  • a detailed project budget which demonstrates your financial contribution,
  • name and details of the proposed training provider,
  • additional information upon request.

Operating Grant Program

Description:

The Operating Grant Program (OGP) helps to address the affordability of child care services for families with young children throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Effective January 1, 2022, the OGP requires participating child care centers to lower their rates to $15 per day for Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers and Full-Day School-Age children. The Provincial Government will, in turn, provide an operating grant to these centres.  

Comments on Funding:

The Operating Grant for Child Care centres (per space/per day) is:

  • $46.50 (enhanced $52) for infants (Full-time);
  • $28.50 (enhanced $30) for toddlers (Full-time);
  • $25 (enhanced $28.50) for pre-school (Full-time);
  • $25 (enhanced $28.50) for school age (Full-day);
  • $10.50 (enhanced $14) for after school;
  • $10.50 (enhanced $14) for before & after school;
  • $23.25 (enhanced $26) for infants (Part-time);
  • $14.25 (enhanced $16) for toddlers (Part-time);
  • $12.50 (enhanced $14.25) for pre-school (Part-time);
  • $12.50 (enhanced $14.25) for school age (Part-time).

The Operating Grant range for family homes (per space/per day) is:

  • $43.50 (enhanced $52) for infants (Full-time);
  • $27 (enhanced $32) for toddlers (Full-time);
  • $24 (enhanced $28.50) for pre-school (Full-time);
  • $24 (enhanced $28.50) for school age (Full-day);
  • $9.50 (enhanced $14) for after school;
  • $9.50 (enhanced $14) for before & after school;
  • $21.75 (enhanced $26) for infants (Part-time);
  • $13.50 (enhanced $16) for toddlers (Part-time);
  • $12 (enhanced $14.25) for pre-school (Part-time);
  • $12 (enhanced $14.25) for school age (Part-time).

The enhanced rate includes the provision of meals and snacks.

The Operating Grant Program (OGP) for centre-based child care is a key component of the Provincial Government’s child care strategy, Caring For Our Future.
