Description:

Options Youth is an employment wage subsidy program funded by Service Canada and facilitated by the Saint Mary’s University Entrepreneurship Centre and Enactus Saint Mary’s. The program consist of personalized skill training and paid work placements to help Nova Scotian youth overcome barriers to enter the workforce.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a 700 hour wage subsidy, covering up to $9/hr, up to a maximum of $6,300

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be employers in Nova Scotia,
  • hire a participant who will engage in virtual training throughout the program
  • place the participant on payroll. 

The participant must be:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of intake/selection,
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act,
  • legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • in need of assistance to overcome employment barriers.

Application Steps:

invoice the program each month,

provide monthly reports to the Project Manager.

Wage Support Program for Early Childhood Educators (WSP-ECE)

Description:

The Wage Support Program for Early Childhood Educators (WSP-ECE) is a wage enhancement program administered by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to support Operators of Early Learning and Childcare facilities with the recruitment and retention of trained educators. 

Comments on Funding:

There are two levels of funding, depending on the training of the educator:

  1. 1
    Level 1: $7.25/hour for educators that have:
  • a Certificate or Diploma in Early Childhood Education,
  • a related degree in Education or Early Childhood Development,
  • an unrelated degree,they will receive:
  • Designated facilities (0-5 years old):
    Step 1: $9.25/hour;
    Step 2: $10.45/hour;
    Step 3: $11.72/hour.
  • School Age:
    Step 1: $7.25/hour;
    Step 2: $8.45/hour;
    Step 3: $9.72/hour.

Non-designated facilities: $7.25/hour

  1. 2
    Entry Level: : $3.15/hour for educators that.
  • have Introduction to Early Childhood Education (90 hours),
  • are school age educators or relief staff (untrained),they will receive:
  • Designated facilities (0-5 years old):
    Step 1: $3.15/hour;
    Step 2: $4.12/hour;
    Step 3: $5.15/hour. 
  • School Age:
    Step 1: $1.15/hour;
    Step 2: $2.12/hour;
    Step 3: $3.15/hour.

Non-designated: $3.15/hour.

Other information:

  1. 1
    The minimum contribution for an operator to the salary of an educator working in a designated facility is $11.75/hour.
  2. 2
    The wage top-up for designated facilities is inclusive of the province’s $2.00/hour to offset the minimum wage increases.
  3. 3
    Operators of non-designated (0-5 years old) and school age facilities are responsible for providing the provincial minimum wage to their educators.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • be operators of licenced early learning and childcare facilities,
  • be located in New Brunswick,
  • enroll their qualifying educators.

Eligible educators must be:

  • educators who contribute to the child-to-staff ratio and work in an educational capacity,
  • Early Learning and Childcare Home Operators,
  • administrators who act as pedagogical leaders (must be recognized as such by EECD and listed as administrator on the licensing documentation) ,
  • relief staff who are employed on a short term, temporary, or on-call basis, who are replacing the hours of an educator who cannot be present due to an authorized short or defined period of time such as, sick leave, appointments, vacation,
  • relief staff working with preschool age children for 10+ days/month (or 88+ hrs/month), if they have completed the Entry Level training.

Applicant must first login to the Operator Portal and consent to the Terms and Conditions for the WSP-ECE,

Applicant must enroll the qualifying educators,

Applicant must report the actual hours worked by all eligible employees on a monthly basis,

Applicant must review funding statements,

Applicant must renew program registration annually.

Community Futures

Description:

The Community Futures program helps to create jobs in rural areas. This is done with the help of more than 40 Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs) throughout Atlantic Canada.

The financial help will take the form of loans, loan guarantees and equity financing.

Atlantic Canada businesses should check with their nearest CBDC office for eligibility criteria.

Other Things to Note:

I. CBDCs help launch small businesses and expand and modernize existing ones. Through the CBDCs, you could get:

    financial help in the form of loans, loan guarantees and equity financing;

    business counselling and advice to help you succeed;

    entrepreneurship development and training to address skills gaps;
  4. 4
    technical help in the form of guidance and coaching.

Internship Program

Amount:

Description:

The Internship Program is designed to give students experience and access to Canada's entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem with the training needed to thrive in small business environments.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a 50-70% wage subsidy (capped at $7,000), per student per term. Employers are required to pay Interns a minimum wage of $15.00/hour or higher via payroll.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be SMEs, start-ups, social enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, or charities.
  • Have a physical office (pre-Covid) in one of the following Canadian provinces: the Northern Territories, BC, AB, SK, MB, QC, NB, NS, PE or NL
  • have between 1 - 500 employees,
  • provide a safe and supportive internship that develops innovation or entrepreneurial skill-building opportunities,
  • pay Interns a minimum wage of $15.00/hour or higher via payroll,
  • hire a student from an underrepresented group (such as: a women studying in STEM, a disabled student, an indigenous student, a newcomer to Canada, a first-year student) to receive a 70% wage subsidy. 

Interns must be:

  • full-time or part-time post-secondary students,
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or refugees.

After students submit the application, Venture Canada will connect them with employers.

Specialized Labour Tax Credit

  • This program is currently closed.

Tax Credit


Description:

The Specialized Labour Tax Credit provides an incentive for workers with specialized expertise or skills not yet available in Prince Edward Island to accept employment here.

Comments on Funding:

The Specialized Labour Tax Credit applies to personal income tax paid to a maximum of 17% on the eligible income earned by an eligible individual. The credit is effective for one year from the employment start date.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • a Prince Edward Island company,
  • active in a strategic sector such as: export-focused manufacturing and processing, interactive, information and communication technology, aerospace, bioscience, renewable energy,
  • whish to hire a specialized worker who migrates to the province for a specific position. The employer must demonstrate that the position was previously advertised in local print news media and could not be filled from the existing PEI labour pool.

Application Steps:

The applicant/company must:

apply to Innovation PEI for to Innovation PEI for a Specialized Labour Tax Credit certificate. If the application meets the criteria and the employee is approved, Innovation PEI will issue a Specialized Labour certificate to the eligible employee.

2

apply for the tax credit before making an employment offer. The company will not be approved for both the Specialized Labour Tax Credit and the Innovation and Development Labour Rebate for the same position.

To claim the rebate, the employee submits the certificate and a copy of the Notice of Assessment and T4 to Innovation PEI.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • the compiled application form,
  • a business and a marketing plan project,
  • a feasibility or market study,
  • a competitive analysis,
  • a Resume,
  • the consultant’s proposal(s) and the study’s terms of reference, if the application concerns a study.

Other Things to Note:

The program is not listed among Innovation PEI programs.
