Agriculture Business Program

Description:

The Agriculture Business Program provides support to the Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture, agri-foods, and agri-products industry to address various business related challenges to pursue and capitalize on new opportunities and maintain access to existing markets. The Program will enable the sector to develop and assess market opportunities both domestically and internationally; enhance business development practices, and support skills development and knowledge transfer activities.

There is funding for the following components: Market Development (market access/development, and organic certification and market development), Business Development (business planning, succession planning, strategic plans, farm financial assessments), and Knowledge Transfer and Skills Development.

Comments on Funding:

Funding for for-profit applicants is up to 75% of eligible expenses, to a maximum of $400,000 over the 5 years of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Funding for not-for-profit groups and government is up to 100% of eligible expenses and up to 75% of eligible capital expenditures. They are not restricted to the $400,000 funding limit where the project has industry-wide benefit.

Funding for business planning activities is as follows:

  • up to a maximum of $8,000 for one producer/processor,
  • up to a maximum of $16,000 for two producers/processors,
  • up to a maximum of $25,000 for three producers/processors,
  • up to a maximum of $50,000 for four or more producers/processors.

Land development project reimbursement is based upon acreage payments.

March 31, 2023

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • primary producers and producer organizations, 
  • processors and processor organizations, 
  • other industry organizations, 
  • research bodies,
  • other development groups,
  • Indigenous government/community/groups,
  • involved in the Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture, agri-foods, and agri-products industry with market development, business development or knowledge transfer and skills development projects.

Application Steps:

Applicants must submit the completed application form and supporting documents by email at CAP@gov.nl.ca, fax at 709-637-2589 or in hard copy by regular mail.

Documentation Needed: 

​Applicant must submit:

  • a completed application form,
  • a resume, curriculum vitae, or firm profile of their consultant, if requesting consultant services,
  • a quote, if requesting professional services/contractors or support to obtain Organic Certification, 
  • land title documents, quotes with brochures, floor plans, materials list and map showing facility and/or infrastructure location on site, if applying for physical infrastructure to enhance market competitiveness,
  • quotes and equipment specifications/brochures, if applying for equipment to enhance market competitiveness,
  • the event agenda/information package including speakers/exhibitors and registration fees, if applying to attend human resources events,
  • the name of the human resources event, agenda/information package including speakers/exhibitors and proposed budget, if applying to host human resources events,
  • the most recent financial information as appropriate,
  • a business plan, if a new entrant.

Other Things to Note:

This program is part of the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3 billion, five year, Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Framework Agreement that will expire on March 31, 2023.
