Description:

The Patron of the Arts Award recognizes a person, business, or organization that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador through innovative, community, or sustained support of artistic activity.

The Hall of Honour Award recognizes a person, group, or organization that has made a distinguished lifetime contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Emerging Artist Award recognizes new and undisputed talent. It is awarded to an emerging artist, arts group, or arts organization that has earned significant recognition for their professional artistic practice.

The Arts in Education Award recognizes an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to arts in education in Newfoundland and Labrador over a number of years.

The Artists’ Achievement Award is given annually to a practicing artist who has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador over a number of years.

The Artist of the Year Award recognizes the art or activity of an artist, arts group, or arts organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.  

Comments on Funding:

The Emerging Artist Award, The Arts in Education Award, The Artists’ Achievement Award and The Artist of the Year Award come with a cash prize of $2,500 and a piece of original art.
The Patron of the Arts Award and The Hall of Honour Award come with a piece of original art.

Eligibility:

The nominee must be: 

  • a person, group, business, or organization,
  • a resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of 12 months prior to the date of the nomination, if nominated for The Emerging Artist Award, The Arts in Education Award and The Artist of the Year Award.
  • a practicing artist who has been resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for at least five years prior to the date of the nomination, if nominated for The Artists’ Achievement Award. 

“Resident“ is defined as someone who maintains a principal place of residence in the province. In the case of groups and organizations, 50% of the membership must qualify under the residency rules.

Members of the arts community and general public can nominate one person, group, or organization via the online nomination form.

ArtsNL will contact nominees to request support materials. 

Documentation Needed: 

The nominator must submit the nomination form which will be regarded as a letter of support.

The nominee must supply:

The BMO Winterset Award

Description:

The BMO Winterset Award is designed to encourage and promote excellence in all genres of writing. The BMO Winterset Award is awarded to an outstanding literary work in any writing genre (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, published drama etc.) regardless of the subject matter. One prize of $12,500, and two prizes of $3,000 are awarded annually.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be publishers on behalf of the writer,
  • have published literary works, written either by a native-born Newfoundlander and Labradorian, or by a current resident of the province. 

Residency is defined as having lived in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of twelve consecutive months immediately prior to the time of submission of works.

Both emerging or established writers may be considered. Works must have been published between January and December of the current calendar year.

Submissions must be made by a publisher, and must include at least four non-returnable copies of all works submitted.
Submissions are made to ArtsNL and are accepted on an on-going basis throughout the year. The annual deadline for submissions is December 31.

ArtsSmarts

Description:

ArtsSmarts is available to schools and school boards in the provincial K-12 education system. The program goal is to engage young people in artistic activity to develop supporters and practitioners of the arts by nurturing creative thinkers. Projects must incorporate artistic disciplines served by ArtsNL. These are dance, film and video, new media arts (computer animation, online art creation), multidiscipline (exploring two or more art forms), music (classical, modern, and traditional), theatre (including storytelling and circus), visual arts (including traditional crafts, photography, and pottery) and creative writing. 

Comments on Funding:

The maximum grant awarded by ArtsSmarts is $7,000, and the minimum grant to be awarded is $1,000, or the total amount requested by the applicant if less than $1,000.

Eligibility:

The applicants must be schools and school boards in the provincial K-12 system.

Only professional individual artists, groups of artists, or professional not-for-profit arts organization are eligible to work in schools on ArtsSmarts Projects.

Definition of a professional artist:

A person shall be considered to be a professional artist if that person satisfies 4 of the following criteria, including at least one of the criteria referred to in paragraphs (a) to (c):

  • receives or has received compensation which can be included in professional or business income,
  • has a record of income or loss relevant to the history of his or her work and appropriate to the span of his or her artistic career,
  • has received public or peer recognition by publicly disseminated critical reviews or appraisals or by similar means,
  • has presented his or her work to the public by means of exhibitions, publications, screenings, performances, readings, or by other means appropriate to the nature of his or her work,
  • is represented by a dealer, publisher, agent or similar professional representative appropriate to the nature of his or her work,
  • devotes a reasonable proportion of his or her professional time to promoting or marketing his or her work;
  • the person
  • has received professional training in an educational institution from a practitioner recognized in his or her profession, or
  • is self-taught within the established practices of the person’s cultural traditions,
  • has membership in a professional association, appropriate to his or her artistic activity,
  • whose membership is or categories of membership are limited under standards of the association, or
  • which is a trade union or equivalent appropriate to his or her artistic activity, and
  • holds copyright in his or her own work and has received royalty or residual payment based on that copyright.

Definition of a professional arts group:

A group of individual artists who work in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL and that:

  • has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as its primary activity,
  • is composed of at least two individuals,
  • has all members meeting ArtsNL’s definition of a professional artist,
  • charges artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
  • pays individual members artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
  • has internal oversight of the group's finances and can produce an annual financial statement.

Definition of a professional not-for-profit arts organization:

A formal organization operating in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL and that:

  • has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as its primary activity,
  • is registered, or operates as a non-profit arts entity,
  • has a board of directors overseeing the operations of the organization,
  • has a paid artistic director, general manager, or equivalent,
  • pays artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
  • has internal or external oversight of the organization’s finances and produces an annual financial statement.

Application Steps:

register on the ArtsNL Online Application System before they can complete an online application form,

wait for ArtsNL to approve their registration,

submit additional documentation, if required. 

Documentation Needed: 

​The applicant must submit:

  1. 1
    a complete application on/before the application deadline consisting of a brief summary of the overall project at the school, a listing of the number of students and teachers taking part in the overall project, a listing of the grade levels taking part on the overall project, overall project start and end dates, a detailed project description and budget for each specific project, a detailed overall budget for the whole school project, résumé/bio for each artist involved in the project that confirms a professional arts practice as defined above, and confirms the individual’s province of residency,

A final report on all projects funded by ArtsNL is typically required within three months of the project end date listed on the application form.

Other Things to Note:

Only one application will be accepted from each applicant (i.e., school or school board) per application deadline. Up to seven specific projects may be included in a single application.

Ross Leslie Award

Description:

The Ross Leslie Award honours the life and memory of actor and film production manager, Ross Leslie, who first came to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2010. The recipient of this $500 cash award will be an artist who demonstrates excellence and passion in their own practice and is inclusive, generous and supportive of the broader arts community. The award will rotate annually between film, theatre, and visual art and will be chosen by the peer assessment committee during the fall granting session of ArtsNL’s Professional Project Grants Program in those categories.

The funding is in the form of a $500 cash award.

Professional Project Grants Program (PPGP), Rhonda Payne Theatre Award

Description:

The Professional Project Grants Program (PPGP) is available to Individual professional artists, collaborations of individual professional artists, and professional arts groups. It provides funding to support the creation and/or presentation of works of art in the disciplines of dance, film, music, multidisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts, or writing. Grants support project costs related to creation, production, administration, travel, professional development.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is minimum 75% of the funding requested.
The maximum request per PPGP grant categories.

  1. 1
    $6,000 for New Professional Artist or Group (individual artists with less than three years professional arts practice post education, or groups in which at least half of the members each has less than three years professional arts practice post education,
  2. 2
    $15,000 for Established Professional Artist or Group (individuals with more than three years professional arts practice post education, or groups in which at least half of the members each has more than three years professional arts practice post education). Applicants can be awarded ONE grant through the PPGP in a 12 month period.

​All female applicants in the theatre category are considered for the Rhonda Payne Theatre Award. One award of $500 is given annually.

The applicant must:

  • be an Individual professional artist, 
  • be a collaboration of individual professional artists,
  • be a professional arts group,
  • be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status, a current resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of twelve consecutive months at the time of submitting an application and at least 18 years of age or hold post-secondary standing, if a professional individual artist,
  • have been active in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of one year at the time of submitting an application, have actively engaged in professional arts activities within the last year, have at least half its members residing in Newfoundland and Labrador and have at least half its members who are at least 18 years of age, or have post-secondary standing, if a professional arts group,
  • be working in the disciplines of dance, film, music, multidisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts, or writing. 

Definition of a professional artist:

Other Things to Note:

PPGP's guidelines no longer mention anything Lawrence Jackson Writers’ Award. Moreover, this award is no longer listed among ArtsNL awards.
