Prix Grand-Pré

Description:

Prix Grand-Pré is an annual award established in 1987. It recognizes Nova Scotia's creative and interpretive artists working in any medium whose work reflects Acadian cultural values, while demonstrating excellence and originality.

Eligibility:

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years, 
  • have had an impact on the province’s Acadian culture,
  • be currently active in their artistic practice,
  • agree to be nominated,
  • not have received the Grand-Pré Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by an individual, a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Application Steps:

The nominator must:

also obtain permission from the nominee,

deliver the application by email to artsnssubmissions@novascotia.ca.

Portia White Prize

Description:

The Portia White prize recognizes cultural and artistic excellence on the part of a Nova Scotian artist who has attained professional status, mastery and recognition in their discipline. 

Comments on Funding:

The primary recipient will receive $18,000 and a certificate of recognition.
A secondary recipient, who is an emerging Nova Scotia artist or a Nova Scotia cultural organization selected by the primary recipient, will receive $7,000 and a certificate of recognition.

Eligibility:

Award nominees must:

  • be creative and interpretive artists working in any medium, who either were born in Nova Scotia or who have been resident in the province for at least the past four years, 
  • have made an impact on the province’s cultural life,
  • be currently active in their artistic practice,
  • agree to be nominated,
  • not have received a Portia White Prize in the past,
  • be nominated by three individuals who are all currently residents in the province, or, by a cultural organization or business registered or incorporated in Nova Scotia.

Creative Community Impact Award

Description:

The Creative Community Impact Award recognizes an organization or program that has made a positive impact on a community through arts and culture. It also provides a financial investment intended to enhance future arts and culture activities and to encourage further engagement. 

Comments on Funding:

The award carries a cash value of $10,000.

Eligibility:

The award nominee:

  • must be a Nova Scotia-based non-profit arts and culture organization or an arts and culture program within a non-profit organization that has been operating for four years or more,
  • must be a municipality or a Nova Scotian Mi’kmaq Band Council,
  • must have proven a history of community engagement with arts and culture,
  • may only receive this award once.

  • a completed application form,
  • a brief overview of the organization, community or program (1-page max.),
  • a nominator’s statement, which answers the following questions: How does the organization/program engage community through arts and culture? (1-page max.), Describe and define the community (communities) that the organization/program serves? (1-page max.), How does the organization/program support positive social impact in their community? Please provide examples. (1-page max.)
  • two letters of support,
  • supporting documentation.

Artist Recognition Awards

Description:

The Artist Recognition Awards help artists showcase the recipients’ work to residents of the province and to people beyond Nova Scotia's borders.

They are awarded to artists in three categories:

  1. 1
    The Emerging Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists of any age who are in the early-stages of their professional career, have completed specialized training, and have presented their work publicly.
  2. 2
    The Established Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia.
  3. 3
    The Indigenous Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists of Indigenous backgrounds who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia. 
  4. 4
    The Black Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who are members of the historical Black communities of Nova Scotia and the wider African Diaspora within the province, who have emerged from their initial training or gained experience to become recognized, established artists amongst their immediate communities and Nova Scotia.

Comments on Funding:

Each award carries a cash value of $5,000.

Eligibility:

  • Artists may be nominated by individuals or organizations. 
  • Nominees must have achieved professional recognition, as recognized within their arts discipline. Eligible disciplines are: Theatre, Dance, Literary Arts, Music, Visual Arts, New Media, Media, Design and Craft,
  • Nominees must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and have been resident in the province for at least the past four years.
  • Artists cannot be nominated for both an Artist Recognition Award and the Portia White Prize in the same year.
  • Previous recipients of an Artist Recognition Award cannot be nominated for another in the same category.
  • Previous recipients of the Portia White Prize cannot be nominated for an Artist Recognition Award.
  • The applicants must be professional artists as defined by the Status of the Artist Act (including, but not limited to: having peer recognition, having a history of public presentation, having training appropriate to the artist's chosen discipline (including mentorship and/or apprenticeship training), earning income, fully or in part, from artistic activity, demonstrating serious intent and devotion of energy to practicing art).

Project Grants for Publishing

Description:

The Project Grants for Publishing Program is designed to stimulate literary arts’ production, dissemination, and commissioning. It assist in the growth and development of the publishing field and the exploration of new models of publishing activity.

There are three types of grants, depending on the assisted activities:

  1. 1
    Production Grants assist with the creation/production of a specific work(s), for example the creation or production of a new work, new translation or new digital format.
  2. 2
    Dissemination Grants assist with the dissemination of work(s) through public engagement activities or strategic partnerships with other organizations, for example , funding an author tour, public readings, or a public event.
  3. 3
    Commissioning Grants assist with the creation of a new literary work by a Nova Scotian artist. Commissions can include professional authors, artists, illustrators, photographers. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding for Production Grants is up to $15,000.
Funding for Dissemination Grants is up to $10,000.
Funding for Commissioning Grants is up to $5,000.
Applicants may request funding in one or more categories.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • have been a legally registered company or society, with head office and general operations based in Nova Scotia, operating for at least two years with book publishing as their primary (rather than a peripheral or occasional) business, and the publication of original titles as the focus of that business,
  • be a registered company, society or a collective, with a minimum demonstrable two year record of engaging in publishing activity,
  • be managed and financially controlled by Nova Scotia residents (who own at least 75% of the company),
  • maintain full control over editorial process, and have editorial independence from any other company,
  • have at least 75% of the titles produced by authors other than principals in the company or related companies. In addition, consideration will be given to:
  • organizations that have at least 4 eligible titles in print, have published a minimum of two first edition titles per year for the past 2 years, and show an ongoing commitment to publishing original titles,
  • organizations or collectives that are emerging in the publishing field and demonstrate a compelling project that addresses needs not currently served by established publishing organizations.

Application Steps:

The applicant must submit his complete application by hand, courier or by email or regular mail.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • a completed application form,
  • a detailed project description,
  • business/organizational profile,
  • project objectives and anticipated outcomes,
  • support material,
  • proposal financial template. 

Letters of intent from any person or organization involved in the project, and/or letters of support from professional, practicing artists in the relevant discipline(s) might be necessary. Applicants must contact the program officer when in doubt about these documents.

Other Things to Note:

The program is no longer listed among Arts Nova Scotia Programs and the last recipients of the program were announced in 2019.
