Description:

The Professional Project Grants Program (PPGP) is available to Individual professional artists, collaborations of individual professional artists, and professional arts groups. It provides funding to support the creation and/or presentation of works of art in the disciplines of dance, film, music, multidisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts, or writing. Grants support project costs related to creation, production, administration, travel, professional development.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is minimum 75% of the funding requested.
The maximum request per PPGP grant categories.

$6,000 for New Professional Artist or Group (individual artists with less than three years professional arts practice post education, or groups in which at least half of the members each has less than three years professional arts practice post education,

$15,000 for Established Professional Artist or Group (individuals with more than three years professional arts practice post education, or groups in which at least half of the members each has more than three years professional arts practice post education). Applicants can be awarded ONE grant through the PPGP in a 12 month period.

All female applicants in the theatre category are considered for the Rhonda Payne Theatre Award. One award of $500 is given annually.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

be an Individual professional artist,
be a collaboration of individual professional artists,
be a professional arts group,
be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident Status, a current resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of twelve consecutive months at the time of submitting an application and at least 18 years of age or hold post-secondary standing, if a professional individual artist,
have been active in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of one year at the time of submitting an application, have actively engaged in professional arts activities within the last year, have at least half its members residing in Newfoundland and Labrador and have at least half its members who are at least 18 years of age, or have post-secondary standing, if a professional arts group,
be working in the disciplines of dance, film, music, multidisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts, or writing.

Definition of a professional artist:

A person shall be considered to be a professional artist if that person satisfies 4 of the following criteria, including at least one of the criteria referred to in paragraphs (a) to (c):

receives or has received compensation which can be included in professional or business income,
has a record of income or loss relevant to the history of his or her work and appropriate to the span of his or her artistic career,
be a professional arts group,
has presented his or her work to the public by means of exhibitions, publications, screenings, performances, readings, or by other means appropriate to the nature of his or her work,
is represented by a dealer, publisher, agent or similar professional representative appropriate to the nature of his or her work,
devotes a reasonable proportion of his or her professional time to promoting or marketing his or her work;
the person

has received professional training in an educational institution from a practitioner recognized in his or her profession
is self-taught within the established practices of the person’s cultural traditions,

has membership in a professional association, appropriate to his or her artistic activity,

whose membership is or categories of membership are limited under standards of the association, or
which is a trade union or equivalent appropriate to his or her artistic activity, and

holds copyright in his or her own work and has received royalty or residual payment based on that copyright.

Definition of a professional arts group:
A group of individual artists who work in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL:

that has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as its primary activity,
that is composed of at least two individuals,
that has all members meeting ArtsNL’s definition of a professional artist,
that charges artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
that pays individual members artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
that has internal oversight of the group's finances and can produce an annual financial statement.

Application Steps:

Applicants must submit complete applications and support material online using the ArtsNL Online Application System by 11:59pm on the application deadline.

Documentation Needed:

A final report on all projects funded by ArtsNL is typically required within three months of the project end date listed on the application form.

Other Things to Note:

PPGP's guidelines no longer mention anything Lawrence Jackson Writers’ Award. Moreover, this award is no longer listed among ArtsNL awards.

School Touring Program (STP)

Description:

The School Touring Program (STP) is available to professional artists, groups, and not-for-profit arts organizations to support significant touring productions to schools throughout the province. The program covers touring costs only (i.e. travel, accommodation, per diems, artist and technician fees, tour administration, royalties, and limited rehearsal).

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to $20,000.
A full grant of $20,000 requires at least 10 presentations/ performances, or 7 if the tour includes one or more stops in Labrador or communities on the south coast of the island that are not accessible by road. At least two thirds of the presentations/ performances must be in rural schools.

A formal organization operating in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL and that:

has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as its primary activity,
is registered, or operates as a non-profit arts entity,
has a board of directors overseeing the operations of the organization,
has a paid artistic director, general manager, or equivalent,
pays artist fees at established national standards for the artistic discipline(s) and practice in which it operates,
has internal or external oversight of the organization’s finances and produces an annual financial statement.

Application Steps:

is encouraged to book a meeting with program staff to discuss his application well before the application deadline,

must submit complete applications and support material online using the ArtsNL Online Application System,

must submit final reports on all past ArtsNL grants before ArtsNL will release funding for a new project,

must submit emailed confirmation from the schools they will visit before a grant cheque will be released.

Only one application per artist, group or organization will be accepted per application deadline.

Documentation Needed:

The applicant must submit:

submit a complete application on/before the application deadline consisting of a detailed project description of the tour and workshops, a budget, a list of potential schools for the tour, and resumes/bios of key participants that confirm a professional arts practice,
support material of the presentation to be shown to students,
a list of board or group members including province of residency for each individual, and a financial statement for their last completed fiscal year listing revenue, expenses, surplus/deficit for the last year, and accumulated surplus/deficit, if a group or an organization.

A final report on all projects funded by ArtsNL is typically required within three months of the project end date listed on the application form.

The program is offered in partnership with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development through its Cultural Connections Strategy.
Application deadline: June 15 for projects in the upcoming school year (September to June).

Professional Artists’ Travel Fund (PATF)

Description:

The Professional Artists’ Travel Fund (PATF) is available to Individual Professional Artists, Collaborations of Individual Professional Artists, and Professional Arts Groups invited to take part in unexpected activities that will enhance their careers. Such activities would include the presentation of the artists’ work in a new location, a regional, national, or international audition, or a celebration of the artist’s work through an award or nomination.

Comments on Funding:

Funding for individuals is a grant of up to $1000 for travel within Newfoundland or within Labrador, and up to $1,000 for travel between Newfoundland and Labrador, or outside the province.

Funding for groups is a grant of up to $2000 for a duo travelling within Newfoundland or within Labrador, up to $2,500 for a duo travelling between Newfoundland and Labrador, or outside the province, and up to $2,500 for a trio (or more) travelling within or outside the province.

Eligible costs include return airfare, bus or train tickets, mileage, local transportation, hotel/accommodation, and per diems.

A final report on all projects funded by ArtsNL is typically required within three months of the project end date listed on the application form.

Other Things to Note:

The PATF operates four funding cycles each fiscal year (April 1 to June 30, July 1 to September 30, October 1 to December 31, and January 1 to March 31). Funds may be exhausted before the end of a funding cycle.
