Community Arts Program (CAP)

Description:

The Community Arts Program (CAP) is available to community-based not-for-profit arts organizations and groups. The program funds projects related to arts workshops, presentations, productions, new creations, adjudicator fees, artist fees, and travel costs.

Comments on Funding:

The maximum grant request is $5,000, and the minimum grant to be awarded is $1,000 (or the total amount requested if less than $1,000).

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be community-based arts organizations and groups,
  • be working in any artistic discipline served by Arts NL (dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual arts, writing),
  • have been active in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of one year at the time of submitting an application,
  • have been actively engaged in community-based arts activities within the last year,
  • have at least half its members (for groups) or board members (for organizations) residing in Newfoundland and Labrador,
  • have at least half its members (for groups) or board members (for organizations) who are at least 18 years of age, or have post-secondary standing.

A community-based arts group is a group of individual artists who work in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL and that:

  • has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as a primary activity,
  • is composed of at least two individuals,
  • operates in a not-for-profit capacity,
  • operates as a community-based organization (i.e. run by volunteers and typically does not pay a professional administrator or artistic director),
  • has internal oversight of the group's finances and can produce an annual financial statement.

A community-based not-for-profit arts organization is a formal organization operating in one or more of the artistic disciplines supported by ArtsNL and that:

  • has the creation and/or presentation of works of art as a primary activity,
  • is registered, or operates as a non-profit arts entity,
  • has a board of directors overseeing the operations of the organization,
  • operates as a community-based organization (i.e. run by volunteers and typically does not pay a professional administrator or artistic director),
  • has internal or external oversight of the organization’s finances and produces an annual financial statement.

Application Steps:

are encouraged to book a meeting with program staff to discuss their application well before the application deadline,

must submit complete applications and support material online using the ArtsNL Online Application System by 11:59pm on the application deadline,

must submit final reports on all past ArtsNL grants before ArtsNL will release funding for a new project.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must submit:

  • a complete application on/before the application deadline consisting of: a detailed project description, a history of the organization or group, list of the organization’s board or group members, a budget, and resumes/bios of professional artists involved in the project that confirms a professional arts practice, and resumes of other key individuals involved in the project,
  • support materials that relate to the project, if the case,
  • a copy of the financial statement for their last completed fiscal yea listing revenue, expenses, surplus/deficit for the last year, and accumulated surplus/deficit.

A final report on all projects funded by ArtsNL is typically required within three months of the project end date listed on the application form.

Other Things to Note:

Annual Application Deadline: September 30.
Projects must start on/after December 1.
