Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy (AWS) Program

Description:

The Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy (AWS) program assists apprentices to gain work experience in their skilled trade, and progress to journeyperson certification by providing a wage subsidy to employers who hire apprentices. The program supports apprentices across all levels – First, Second, Third and Fourth year.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a wage subsidy of 75%, to a maximum of $14 an hour, for all apprentices funded under the program, and is paid directly to the employers who hire the apprentice.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be employers that are incorporated businesses, or sole proprietorships, and registered to conduct business in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • be in good standing with the Newfoundland and Labrador Registry of Companies and Deeds,
  • have an office or operation in the province,
  • have a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the department that confirms they have a qualified journeyperson on site in the appropriate trade,
  • be able to offer relevant work experience to the apprentice as required by the Institutional and Industrial Training Division.

Apprentices:

  • can be EI eligible or Non EI eligible, 
  • must be eligible to register, or already be registered, with the Institutional and Industrial Training Division as an apprentice,
  • are only eligible to be subsidized for two levels of their apprenticeship certification training under the AWS program. 

Application Steps:

register and create an account in the Department of Immigration, Skills and Labour LaMPSS payment system to apply on-line,

complete and submit an online application.

Apprentices can complete the Apprentice Application form and submit it to the department. This application will be kept on file with the department and may be shared with an employer looking to hire someone with a particular skilled trade.

Documentation Needed: 

Applicant must submit:

  • an online application form,
  • a job description, including any education or qualifications required for the position

Other Things to Note:

This funding program is made possible by the Canada-New Brunswick Agreement on the Provision of French-Language Services, administered jointly by Intergovernmental Affairs, with the New Brunswick Executive Council, and Heritage Canada.

Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy Program Guidelines

Canada Apprentice Loan

Amount:

$4,000.00

Description:

The Canada Apprentice Loan is available to help registered Red Seal apprentices cover the cost of their training, for up to 5 periods of technical training. The money can be used to help pay for tuition, tools, equipment and living expenses, to cover forgone wages or to help support the family. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to $4,000 in interest-free loans per period of technical training.
The loan will be interest-free for up to 6 years as long as the apprentice is confirmed as being registered in a Red Seal Trade apprenticeship program.
Payments have to be made only after the applicant completes or leaves his apprenticeship training program.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person,
  • be registered in a Red Seal Trade apprenticeship program that is designated by the province or territory where he is registered as an apprentice,
  • be enrolled in block release technical training or the equivalent full-time technical training with an approved technical training provider,
  • pass a credit check (required if applying for the first time).

Application Steps:

The applicant must:

1

register for a Canada Apprentice Loan online service account,

2

include his banking information and agree to Terms and Conditions of applying for and receiving a Canada Apprentice Loan,

3

submit his application online,

4

apply the earliest 3 months before his technical training starts and the latest in the last day of his technical training.

Documentation Needed:

The applicants must attach to the application the following documentation:

  1. 1
    a copy of a valid photo identification issued in Canada by the federal or a provincial/territorial government,
  2. 2
    a copy of a document proving that the Social Insurance Number (SIN) on the application and agreement is theirs,
  3. 3
    a copy of their Permanent Resident Card, Confirmation of Permanent Residence, or Record of Landing document issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, if they are permanent residents,
  4. 4
    a copy of their Notice of Decision issued by the Immigration and Refugee Board, Verification of Status document issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, or Protected Person Status Document issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, if they are protected persons.

Provincial Apprentice Completion Award for Non-Red Seal Trades

$2,000.00

Grants


Description:

The Provincial Apprentice Completion Award for Non-Red Seal Trades provides apprentices in non-Red Seal apprenticeship programs that have 3, 4 or 5 levels of training a taxable $2,000 award once they complete all training requirements and receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is a taxable $2,000 award.

  • be Nova Scotia apprentices from Non-Red Seal Trades,
  • have 3, 4 or 5 levels of training,
  • have successfully completed all training requirements and received a Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Applications must be received within 90 days of becoming eligible.

Other Things to Note:

Awards will be processed twice yearly:
For clients who meet criteria and apply between January and June, award will be processed in October.

For clients who meet criteria and apply between July and December, award will be processed the following April.

Provincial Apprentice Progression Award

$750.00

Grants


Description:

The Provincial Apprentice Progression Award provides $750 to apprentices from all designated trades if they successfully complete a level of apprenticeship training. Each level of a provincial trade completed will be eligible except the final level of the trade because the apprentice is then eligible for the Provincial Completion Award.

Apprentices in a Red Seal trade can apply for a taxable $750 Provincial Apprentice Progression Award if they successfully complete Level 3 of their apprenticeship program. This does not apply if the trade is 3 levels because they are eligible for the Completion Award.

Funding is a taxable $750 award.
