Description:

The Space Technology Development Program (STDP) provides funding to for-profit and not-for-profit organizations established and operating in Canada for projects that:

  1. 1
    . reduce technological unknowns of future space missions, and
  2. 2
    stimulate industrial innovation and strengthen core capabilities in order to increase industrial readiness and competitiveness of Canadian space companies.

Comments on Funding:

Funding will take the form of a grant, and will be provided for each open project opportunity.

Applicants must be:

  • for-profit and not-for-profit organizations,
  • established and operating in Canada.

Only for-profit organizations established and operating in Canada are eligible to be awarded non-repayable contributions.

About the Space Technology Development Program (STDP)

Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP)

Description:

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) funds downstream research and development (R&D) projects that address real world opportunities and challenges identified by industry, government, not-for-profits and other “Receptors” of genomics knowledge and technologies. GAPP projects are collaborations between academic researchers and Receptor organizations, and are co-funded by Genome Canada, Receptors and other stakeholders.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 1/3 of the project budget from Genome Canada, from a minimum contribution of $100,000 to a maximum of $2 million.
The remaining project funding must be secured from other eligible sources, with at least 1/3 provided by the Receptor(s).

Eligibility:

Eligible projects must:

  • be co-led by an eligible Academic and Receptor organization in partnership, with active and necessary roles for both,
  • develop and apply a genomics-derived tool, product or process to an opportunity or need defined by the Receptor(s);
  • focus on late stage R&D that will position the innovation for near term implementation / commercialization;
  • have the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for Canada.

The applicant is an academic researcher and he must be:

  • a faculty member of a Canadian university or affiliated, non-commercial entity, such as hospitals and research institutes,
  • researchers in not-for-profit corporations or registered charities may qualify as Academics for the purposes of GAPP if their organization has an explicit research mandate.

The Receptors must:

  • be organizations that intend to put the resulting innovation into practice (in internal operations, by commercialization, or otherwise making it available to its ultimate users),
  • be companies (private / public, Canadian / foreign-owned, including small or start up companies),
  • be industry consortia,
  • be government departments and agencies (federal, provincial and municipal),
  • be healthcare organizations,
  • be not-for-profit organizations,
  • have clear decision-making processes independent of the Academic Leader. 

Application Steps:

Applicants must submit their GAPP applications and the supporting documents via a regional Genome Centre.
They must contact their regional Genome Centre for more information.

Documentation Needed: 

Applicants must:

  • submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) which includes a summary of the proposed project and its value proposition,
  • “pitch” their project via teleconference to a panel of external industry and technical experts convened by Genome Canada, if invited to,
  • submit the Supplementary Proposal which provides a more thorough description of several sections of the EOI, including a detailed explanation of the technical aspects, project plan and budget, if invited.

Genome Canada is again welcoming Expressions of Interest for the GAPP. Please contact your Regional Genome Centre for more information on the application process and timelines (June 2021).

Lab-to-Market Fund

Description:

The Lab-to-Market Fund aims to accelerate the development of technologies that have commercial applications. This fund supports activities that help develop new or improved technologies and/or transfer knowledge that address specific, well-defined market problems.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 33% of projects with NB SMEs or not-for-profit organizations, and up to 25% of projects that do not have NB SMEs or not-for-profit organizations as partners.

Applicants must be researchers that should have:

  • a commercialization partner, SMEs or not-for-profit organizations, 
  • student participation, 
  • a clear understanding of the market problem being solved and the competitive advantages of their new technology, 
  • a self-assessment of technology readiness level (minimum TRL 3),
  • a plan for the intellectual property.

NBIF AI Pre-voucher

Description:

The purpose of the AI Pre-Voucher Fund is to help foster the creation of new industry-academia collaborations by allowing an industry partner to explore a small project related to an artificial intelligence (AI) application with an academic partner, at no cost. The project must center around the use of applied AI to solve an industrial problem, with the potential to advance the industry partner’s problem definition through to at least a proof of concept within a nine month time frame.  

Comments on Funding:

Funding is in the form of a pre-voucher up to a maximum size of $20,000. No leverage is required.

Eligibility:

The industry partner must:

  • have demonstrated revenue from FY20-21 and would be in a position to make a cash contribution to a project within the next 12 months,
  • have not previously contributed cash to a research project with the proposed PI,
  • have physical operations in NB and is incorporated in Canada,
  • have not previously used this NBIF AI pre-voucher program.

The PI:

  • must be an eligible NBIF grant holder at an NB research institution,
  • The PI or someone on their team must have some expertise in artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by any combination of their CV, previous AI projects, and/or peer-reviewed articles.

Application Steps:

The applicants must submit a report at the end of the 9 months of funding.

New funding for this program will be released approximately every 3 months.

AI Pre - Voucher Application Portal

Early Stage Commercialization Fund (ESCF)

Description:

The Early Stage Commercialization Fund (ESCF) helps move New Brunswick university, college and institutional research to market. The ESCF assists the academic & institutional research communities in pursuing commercialization opportunities by providing up to $50,000 in funding and go-to-market support.

Projects can be applied for in one of two phases:

Phase 1: for technologies that have achieved proof of concept and are now in initial stages of development.

Phase 2: for projects that have clarified the opportunity for commercialization as well as target markets and potential revenue streams.  

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to $50,000 for projects in either Phase 1 or Phase 2. A given project can receive at most one Phase 1 award and one Phase 2 award, up to a maximum of $50,000 in each phase.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be:

  • research personnel, including professors, research staff, and faculty members, at approved New Brunswick research institutes,
  • graduate, and college students, as well as post-docs, provided a faculty member is a co-applicant.

Eligible expenses include: 

  • intellectual property development,
  • assessment of market potential,
  • development of go-to-market strategies,
  • business plans and strategic plans,
  • development of intellectual property protection strategies,
  • proof-of-concept or prototype development,
  • technology design and optimization.

    the application form,
  2. 2
    a technical report, including a financial report of expenses, at the end of the 1-year funding period.
