NBIF AI Pre-voucher

Description:

The purpose of the AI Pre-Voucher Fund is to help foster the creation of new industry-academia collaborations by allowing an industry partner to explore a small project related to an artificial intelligence (AI) application with an academic partner, at no cost. The project must center around the use of applied AI to solve an industrial problem, with the potential to advance the industry partner’s problem definition through to at least a proof of concept within a nine month time frame.  

Comments on Funding:

Funding is in the form of a pre-voucher up to a maximum size of $20,000. No leverage is required.

Eligibility:

The industry partner must:

  • have demonstrated revenue from FY20-21 and would be in a position to make a cash contribution to a project within the next 12 months,
  • have not previously contributed cash to a research project with the proposed PI,
  • have physical operations in NB and is incorporated in Canada,
  • have not previously used this NBIF AI pre-voucher program.

The PI:

  • must be an eligible NBIF grant holder at an NB research institution,
  • The PI or someone on their team must have some expertise in artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by any combination of their CV, previous AI projects, and/or peer-reviewed articles.

InnovateNL

Description:

InnovateNL provides R&D grants for Newfoundland and Labrador businesses and academics to support research and development projects.

There are calls for projects targeting specific areas (e.g. GeoExplore, Arctic Tech, Petroleum R&D Accelerator) as well as general calls for projects where projects from any sector can fit (e.g. EmployR&D, R&D Proof of Concept).

Eligible activities include applied R&D, prototyping, performance testing against pre-determined criteria, field trials and small-scale demonstration projects.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • innovative businesses, located in Newfoundland and Labrador, with pre-commercial R&D needs and high growth potential,
  • Newfoundland and Labrador academics.

Lab-to-Market Fund

Amount:

Description:

The primary objective of the Lab-to-Market fund is to accelerate the development of new or improved technologies and/or transfer knowledge that address specific, well-defined market problems. Lab-to-Market fund emphasizes the importance of validation at all stages of technology development and encourages the application of the scientific method to finding product-market fit.

Comments on Funding:

Funding is up to 33% of projects with NB SMEs or not-for-profit organizations, and up to 25% of projects that do not have NB SMEs or not-for-profit organizations as partners.

Eligibility:

​Applicants must be researchers that should have:

  • a commercialization partner, SMEs or not-for-profit organizations, 
  • student participation, 
  • a clear understanding of the market problem being solved and the competitive advantages of their new technology, 
  • a self-assessment of technology readiness level (minimum TRL 3),
  • a plan for the intellectual property.

Lab-to-Market Fund Application Portal - New Brunswick Innovation Foundation

Research Assistantships Initiative (RAI)

Amount:

$60,000.00

Type of Program:

Wage Subsidy


Description:

The Research Assistantships Initiative (RAI) provides applied researchers funding to hire undergraduate and graduate student research assistants. Funding is advanced to the college or university first, and then paid out to the student(s) in the form of a salary, award, or stipend. 

Comments on Funding:

Funding is in the form of stipends of up to $7,500 per undergraduate, and up to $15,000 per graduate. A maximum of up to $60,000 may be requested in each application.

Eligibility:

The applicants must:

  • be universities, colleges or applied researchers.
  • hire undergraduate and graduate student research assistants.

Talent Recruitment Fund

Amount:

$100,000.00

Description:

Talent Recruitment Fund is intended to help institutions recruit or retain promising early stage researchers into faculty / independent researcher positions. This award is intended to foster excellence in applied research, and to support those research programs with the potential for significant economic impact (direct or indirect) for the province of NB.  

Comments on Funding:

The minimum award size is $30,000 and the maximum award size is $100,000. NBIF expects the normal award size to be $55,000 and the institution will need to justify any deviation away from this normal.

Eligibility:

The candidate for the award:

  • must not yet have agreed to take up the role for which the institution is applying, 
  • may or may not already be working at the institution and may occupy the position that the award is requested for - only if they occupy the position in a temporary capacity. 

The applicant must:

  • be an institution,
  • retain or recruit promising early stage researchers into faculty / independent researcher positions,
  • apply for a role that is: 
  • full-time and physically based in nb,
  • at least 3 years in duration, and with a reasonable expectation that the role will become permanent in the future,
  • a faculty position. post-doctoral fellowships are not eligible (for universities),
  • the primary purpose of the role is to conduct research (and not, for example, to teach),
  • permits the individual to engage in independent research activities that are not under the direction of another researcher,

Other Things to Note:

The award end date is 2 years later, at which point all the funding must be exhausted. Any unspent funding remaining after the award end date must be returned to NBIF.
