Description:

The Artistic Innovation Program is designed to stimulate artistic excellence and audience engagement for Group 2 and Group 3 applicants (organizations that meet the basic eligibility criteria and have a median revenue starting with $160,000) that receive operating funding from Arts Nova Scotia. These Innovation grants are used to support artistic enhancement initiatives, audience or community engagement initiatives, presentation initiatives.

Eligibility:

The applicant must:

  • be a professional arts organization with a mandate to create, produce and/or present the work of professional artists,
  • be led by paid professional leadership and demonstrate formal organizational structures including an active board of directors, established governance structures, and annual financial statements reviewed by an independent accountant,
  • be a registered not-for-profit society or not-for-profit cooperative in good standing with the Nova Scotia Provincial Registry of Joint Stock Companies or federally registered under the Corporations Act as a not-for-profit society or cooperative based and operating in Nova Scotia. Organizations must be registered for a minimum of 2 years before applying.
  • have a minimum annual budget of $40,000 per year,
  • be a Group 2 or Group 3 applicants of the Operating Assistance to Arts Organizations Program. Group 2 organizations have a median revenue of between $160,000 and $650,000 and Group 3 organizations have a median revenue in excess of $650,000. Median revenue is calculated using actual revenue as reported on financial statements from the previous four years of operation.
  • secure multiple sources of revenue such as corporate contributions, donations, sales, and membership fees and must pursue other sources of public or private funding,
  • not receive operating assistance from any other Nova Scotia provincial government agency or departments, Maintain active public engagement or show a form of community support that includes Nova Scotia residents and persons other than those who serve on the board of directors,
  • operate year round, except for presenting organizations which may have regular seasonal programs,
  • support the work of Nova Scotian artists, and pay artist and professional fees in keeping with established national guidelines.
  • not receive a reduction to their operating grant as a result of being placed on Concerned Status.

Application Steps:

The applicant must submit his application by hand, courier or by email or regular mail. 
Artistic innovation grants are project grants and are evaluated separately by the assessment committee.

Documentation Needed: 

The applicant must:

  • provide a brief overview of his organization (5 or 6 lines),
  • briefly describe his Artistic Innovation Project (5 or 6 lines),
  • describe in 1 or 2 paragraphs how does the project enhance artistic development, artistic creation or production/presentation process for his organization,
  • describe in 1 or 2 paragraphs how will the project improve community or audience engagement,
  • describe in 1 or 2 paragraphs how will the project enhance his organization, if the project is a professional development initiative (do not answer if not a professional development project),
  • submit a full budget for the project, including any other sources of funding.

Other Things to Note:

Applicants who apply to this program are also eligible to apply for funding to other Arts Nova Scotia programs.
