Description:

The Patron of the Arts Award recognizes a person, business, or organization that has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador through innovative, community, or sustained support of artistic activity.

The Hall of Honour Award recognizes a person, group, or organization that has made a distinguished lifetime contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Emerging Artist Award recognizes new and undisputed talent. It is awarded to an emerging artist, arts group, or arts organization that has earned significant recognition for their professional artistic practice.

The Arts in Education Award recognizes an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to arts in education in Newfoundland and Labrador over a number of years.

The Artists’ Achievement Award is given annually to a practicing artist who has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador over a number of years.

The Artist of the Year Award recognizes the art or activity of an artist, arts group, or arts organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.  

Comments on Funding:

The Emerging Artist Award, The Arts in Education Award, The Artists’ Achievement Award and The Artist of the Year Award come with a cash prize of $2,500 and a piece of original art.
The Patron of the Arts Award and The Hall of Honour Award come with a piece of original art.

Eligibility:

The nominee must be: 

  • a person, group, business, or organization,
  • a resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of 12 months prior to the date of the nomination, if nominated for The Emerging Artist Award, The Arts in Education Award and The Artist of the Year Award.
  • a practicing artist who has been resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for at least five years prior to the date of the nomination, if nominated for The Artists’ Achievement Award. 

“Resident“ is defined as someone who maintains a principal place of residence in the province. In the case of groups and organizations, 50% of the membership must qualify under the residency rules.

Members of the arts community and general public can nominate one person, group, or organization via the online nomination form.

ArtsNL will contact nominees to request support materials. 

Documentation Needed: 

The nominator must submit the nomination form which will be regarded as a letter of support.

The nominee must supply:

    a bio and recent photo,
  2. 2
    the requested support materials.

Other Things to Note:

The BMO Winterset Award

Description:

The BMO Winterset Award is designed to encourage and promote excellence in all genres of writing. The BMO Winterset Award is awarded to an outstanding literary work in any writing genre (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, published drama etc.) regardless of the subject matter. One prize of $12,500, and two prizes of $3,000 are awarded annually.

The applicant must:

  • be publishers on behalf of the writer,
  • have published literary works, written either by a native-born Newfoundlander and Labradorian, or by a current resident of the province. 

Residency is defined as having lived in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of twelve consecutive months immediately prior to the time of submission of works.

Both emerging or established writers may be considered. Works must have been published between January and December of the current calendar year.

Submissions must be made by a publisher, and must include at least four non-returnable copies of all works submitted.
Submissions are made to ArtsNL and are accepted on an on-going basis throughout the year. The annual deadline for submissions is December 31.

DiscoverBox Start-Up Labs & Pitch Competition

DiscoverBox Start-Up Labs is designed to provide youth entrepreneurs with an opportunity to discover more about their own ability for creating unique and impactful responses to real-world challenges. The program allows students to develop skills in problem-solving, ideation, and entrepreneurship in order to develop their own community-focused business solutions. Start-Up Labs will allow youth entrepreneurs to work through their idea and create a solid foundation for moving forward. At the end of the program, participants will present their business pitch at our Pitch Competition with $10,000 in cash prizes to be won!
